I frankly don't believe a word he said .( Boy , I do believe in his music , body & soul ) . I only look at the actions he took , and give him a huge break on much of it b/c of his art . There are nuggets of truth as you cross reference things ; David Kemper's interview in 1996 , Barlow , Hunter & others . I recently have been re-reading the RS interviews w/ him . The only one that rings true is when he was living w/ MG , and Sunshine in the early 70's . It is the most clear , powerful interview I think he gave . Reading , learning about this man for decades , the early 70's seemed like the happiest time of his life . Most of the rest of his personal life seems contorted by demands he did could not fill , and choices he did not want . His answer was heroin . I admire his attempts to get clean .
Sometimes it gets too late to learn (RZ).

I dont believe anything Garcia said either. A) He was an addict and addicts are liars (speaking as one, and from experience), and B) I have picked up on a number of contradictions of his throughout the years.

Hey PK, glad to see you here. Hope things are going well for you. We were probably at some of the same Blossom shows ... I'm rooting for you, and hope you're getting sunshine of many types (some of which, I know, is not always all that present in that neck of the woods -- but the summer greenery does make up for it!)

Whereas I actually do believe what he said, in the sense that he was human and hence imperfect and changeable but, I assume, doing the best he felt he could and expressing his thoughts as they came to him, just like everyone else. After all, none of us are perfectly consistent; all of us say things we kind of mean or mean at the time or want to mean or just express rather badly. Even BS or putting on an interviewer or engaging in standard drug-addict obfuscation does express a state of mind. One of my favorite quotes, from Walt Whitman: "Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes."

Did Walt ever dip into the morphine the Union surgeons had ? Soldiers Joy , ya' know ? Applies to the multitudes of journalists following the Armies , as well . ( It's a good quote AR , just teasing . )
PK succinctly put forward the case above . ( A shout out to PK , hope the summer has treated you well . )
I have nothing to add . And in the end who knows ? We do know how the music makes us feel down in our soul , though . Putting aside years & dates , it's something we all agree on .

Speaking of CW journalists, there's a good book out there called The Bohemian Brigade that you might like to check out if you haven't seen it. Nothing on morphine, as I recall, but well-written and fascinating!

On Garcia ... well, I'm just not keen on absolutes. "Not believing anything" is just too black and white. Yes, addicts lie. But not all the time, not all inconsistencies are lies, not all changes or misleading statements indicate lies, yadda yadda. Of course that also means that it's important to take statements with a big heaping grain of salt; whether or not someone's an addict, they're unlikely to have the ability to speak in a way that's 100 Percent Perfectly Reflective of Their Own Inner Absolute Truth. Human nature is imperfect, so yeah, read interviews with that knowledge. From anyone. Not just an addict and not just Garcia. That's my view, for what it's worth :-)
